Season 6 Trade DeadlineThis years trade deadline saw more trades than ever before, with a total of 20 players changing teams on 8 trades. Here to break down every one of these trades is GBF senior reporter Ben Grosenthal.
Trade #1 Angels acquire OF Albert Almora and RP Jose Alvarado Rays acquire SP Ariel Miranda and TB 1st Round Pick 1 year after posting 110 regular season wins and running the table in the postseason, the Angels find themselves double digits back of the Dbacks and fighting for a Wild Card spot. At last years trade deadline, the Angels acquired OF Marcell Ozuna who many would say was a key part of their championship run. They are hoping Almora can do the same this year. On the heels of a breakout season last year, Almora has put up similar numbers this season and has a chance at being a .300/30 HR hitter. On the Rays end, its pretty simple, they will get to acquire a rookie with 6 years of service in return for losing their best hitter in a lost season. Good trade for both teams. Trade #2 Tigers acquire OF Victor Victor Mesa Pirates acquire OF Jose Martinez and DET 1st Round Pick This trade shocked the GBF universe once completed. Less than a year since bidding a record $51 posting fee to acquire Mesa's rights, the Pirates trade the young future star to DET for a pick. It appears that after posting a .215 average with just 3 HRs on the year, the Pirates were unwilling to meet Mesa's contract demands. Rather than letting him walk in free agency, the Pirates decided to trade Mesa to the division leading Tigers for a 1st round pick in next years draft. For Detroit, they are banking on Mesa living up to his scouted potential, and for Pittsburgh, they are hoping they didnt give up on him too early. Trade #3 Lions acquire RP Paul Sewald Tigers acquire RP Josh Fields This is nothing more than a salary dump trade as the Lions will take on the remaining $2 a year for Sewald in exchange for an expiring Josh Fields. Sewald is no slouch, as he posted 5 good seasons with the Mets, and a great half season with DET where he posted a 2.66 ERA in limited innings. Trade #4 Marlins acquire SP Blackburn Athletics acquire CF Lloyd Gross and MIA 2nd Round Comp Pick #1 The Marlins are looking to make a big splash in the postseason this year (pun intended), and Blackburn will fill out their rotation nicely. With a career 4.68 ERA, Blackburn isnt going to be winning Cy Youngs, but he will go deep into games and will not walk anybody. It was a hefty price to pay for Miami as they will lose CF Gross, who the Marlins were very high on. They knew he would need a few years to develop, but now Oakland will get to see the results of that developments. Good deal for both teams. Trade #5 Marlins acquire RP Drew Steckenrider Tigers acquire RP Austin Brice Looks to be another salary dump for Detroit as they will be saving $1 by acquiring Brice. Steckenrider has had success in the past, and can still strike out anyone, but the Marlins are hoping for some consistency out of him. Trade #6 Orioles acquire 1B Paul Goldschmidt Cardinals acquire 3B Diego Leary, 1B Ralph Borders, SP Sonny Gray, and SP James Paxton A lot to dig up here. The Orioles are all in for the playoffs this year. They have one of the best young rosters in the league, and Goldschmdit will provide some veteran leadership at 1B. He is not the power hitter he used to be, but Goldy is posting a near .300 average and elite on base skills. The Cardinals definitely cashed in on an expiring Goldschmidt, with 3B Diego Leary being the highlight of the deal. Leary is a Gold Glove caliber 1B, with a still developing bat that should be better than average during his prime. The Cardinals are also getting BAL's round 2 pick in the previous draft, 1B Ralph Borders. Borders still has a few years to develop, and the Cardinals know that. Good deal for the Cardinals, and good deal for the Orioles if they can make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Trade #7 Diamondbacks acquire 3B Manny Machado Lions acquire 3B Danny Eccleston After years of being on the trade block, Machado is finally heading back to the states. Hitting at Chase Field should help bring Machados numbers up to where people expect them to be. Even if that doesnt happen, the Dbacks were fine trading rookie 3B Eccleston for an expiring Machado. The Dbacks have had failure after failure in the playoffs, and now it is Macahdo's turn to try to bring a title to Phoenix. After a promising start to the year, London has once again fallen out of contention. Eccleston isnt the missing piece that will bring London to the playoffs, but he will be a nice depth player on a talented young London team that might go big in free agency this offseason after once again falling short of expectations. Trade #8 Lions acquire LF Rose LeBeau Indians acquire RP Tony Zych
